Book News: HONEY IN HIS MOUTH by Lester Dent

I just found out this morning that pulp writer Lester Dent left behind an unpublished novel. For me this is a gold mine. Those of you who read pulps know that Lester Dent was the man behind Doc Savage. Under the name Kenneth Robeson, he wrote 165 of Doc’s 181 adventures published in the 1930s and 1940s. Dent also wrote several other short stories and novellas at the same time.

He was born in Missouri but moved to Oklahoma. He worked at Chickasha, not far from where I live now, as a telegraph operator. While working there, he started writing pulp fiction. His work was so good that he was soon invited to New York to a regular publishing job, writing the Doc Savage adventures.

Hardcase Crime will publish the new novel by this old master in October of this year. I love the cover. The artwork really sets the tone for this kind of fiction. It’s just a shame that Dent didn’t live long enough to see this one.
